1-2PM
Queer Threads Book Panel with John Chaich, James Gobel, Angie Wilson, Ramekon O'Arwisters, and Jai Carrillo.
In conjunction with the Todd Oldham-designed coffee table book, Queer Threads: Crafting Identity and Community (AMMO Books), featured Bay Area artists Jai Carrillo, James Gobel, Ramekon O'Arwisters, and Angie Wilson join editor and curator John Chaich for a casual discussion about the intersection of identity and fiber art and craft. Books will be available for sale and signing.

2-3PM
KunstCapades LIVE
KunstCapades is an art-themed variety show/podcast hosted by artists Josh Pieper and Tim Sullivan, with house bartender Robyn Carliss. Guests from all points on the artist-curator-dealer-collector spectrum board a gondola up to the recording booth – Altitide, an alpine-island bar in an undisclosed, altitudinous San Francisco location – for conversation and cocktails. Listeners are treated to a rollicking agenda of absurd segments, including “Art Crimes,” “Beats from the Belfry,” “eBay Today,” “Let’s Ask Tantum,” “Bartender’s Ballyhoo,” and intel regarding local openings and calls for work. Join us for a multi-part, LIVE recording of Episode 60 at the 2017 San Francisco Art Book Fair.

3-4PM
Avant Garde Show & Tell with Rob Saunders of Letterform Archive
The Curator of Letterform Archive will bring some Avant Garde goodies from the collection for show-and-tell, showing their transformative influence on twentieth century graphic design. The early twentieth century will be represented by Constructivism, Dada, and Futurism, and the late by concrete poetry and the various countercultures.

4-5PM
Urs Lehni of ROLLO Press: Book Works / Books Work presented by Swissnex SF and Pro Helvetia
In this short talk, graphic designer and publisher Urs Lehni (Rollo Press) will present a number of books (new and old) that he likes and will try to elaborate on the reasons why they seem to work, as books as well as works.

5-6PM
THINGS in Books with Sarah Hotchkiss, Arash Fayez, and Kristee Ono presented by The THING Quarterly
THINGS in Books is about the those objects that exist only in the world of books: fiction, nonfiction or otherwise. Each of the presenters, two artists and a comedian, will be offering some brief thoughts their some of their favorite objects found within some of their favorite works.

SUNDAY, JULY 23RD
11AM-12PM

Place Talks at SFABF with Charlie Macquarie
Charlie will be presenting Some California Watering Places, a loose navigation of the water supplies of the Bay Area and potential California futures, told through the medium government publications and family stories.

1-2PM
Real Time and Space Artist Talk w/ Emma Spertus and Caroline Saves
Caroline Saves and Emma Spertus will discuss their recent experience doing an inter-residency exchange between Real Time & Space, USA and Artistes en Residence, France. As it happens, Caroline and Emma share more than this residency exchange, they are both inspired by and utilize books and printed matter in their art works. Caroline plays with the dot matrix of printing and extraction of images in relation to her textile sculptures and installations. Emma embarks on a corporate modernism escapade, creating fictional paper companies to explore the poetics of paper ream design.

2-3PM
KunstCapades LIVE

3-4PM

MINNESOTA GROVE

SATURDAY, JULY 22ND
11AM-12PM
Heavy Breathing: Jumper/Caller Poetry Zone with Sophia Wang
This poetry and performance workshop will engage participants in a kinetic and collaborative composition exercise to engage body and voice in the process of composing and performing poetic verse. Wear sneakers and/or come ready to use your voice.

2-3PM
Queer Threads Crochet Jam with Ramekon O'Arwisters
As featured in the recently launched art book, Queer Threads: Crafting Identity and Community (AMMO Books), artist Ramekon O'Arwisters invites community members to join him in a Crochet Jam, where we will work side by side to transform found rags into a crocheted textile. Crochet experience is not necessary. A curiosity to collaborate is.

SUNDAY, JULY 23RD
11AM-12PM
Heavy Breathing: Martial Arts for Feminist Journos
with Sarah Burke
In this experimental workshop, attendees will collectively undermine the historic valorization of hyper-masculinized approaches to journalism by learning to value approaches of empowered passivity through practicing the feminist concept of "circlusion" (the antonym of "penetration") and the martial arts concept of "ukemi," the art of receiving a throw.

12-1PM
Tsunaminagashi: Marbling Workshop with Sto Len
Suminagashi or “floating ink,” is a paper marbling process that originated in Japan by Shinto monks in the 12th century. This process produces mono prints by painting patterns directly onto the surface of water with ink, laying down a piece of paper, and removing after a few seconds. For this workshop, Sto will give a talk about his explorations in the studio and on the boat and then guide us through the process of suminagashi, where we will make multiple prints on paper.

2-3PM
SFABF Booky Mascot signings and photos presented by Ry Allred, Eva Gibeau and Ricki Dwyer

MEDIA ROOM

SATURDAY, JULY 22ND
11AM-1:30PM
The Muybridge Mausoleum, a virtual reality art installation presented by Most Ancient.
Most Ancient presents a Virtual Reality station showcasing “The Muybridge Mausoleum”. This VR art installation playfully blends elements of shadow play, 19th century magic lantern shows, and early film set design. We like to think of it as a cinema for neanderthals. For the launch of our first VR project we made a limited edition companion book and screen print for SFABF, available at the Most Ancient booth M8. Both are experimental examples of spinning out content from virtual spaces into print.

2:30-3PM
Joan Jonas is on our mind screening presented by the CCA Wattis InstituteThe Wattis recently published "Joan Jonas is on our mind," a book that accompanies their first year-long research season, about and around the work of Joan Jonas. They will screen two short films by Jonas: Wind (1968) and Songdelay (1973), courtesy Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI), New York.

3-4PM

Along with the book debut of ELLEN CANTOR: "I’m Still Coming” (Capricious), the editors and co-curators of Coming to Power: 25 Years of Sexually X-Plicit Art By Women, Pati Hertling and Julie Tolentino, share three videos by late friend, artist and provocateur Cantor: Evokation of My Demon Sister (2002), Ode to Life (1997), Within Heaven and Hell (1996) followed by an informal chat about the publication: 1993/2016 CTP exhibitions, performances, archival materials, feminist writers - then and now. SATURDAY, JULY 22ND
12PM
From Counterculture to Cyberculture panel discussion with Fred Turner, David Lewis, K.r.m. Mooney and Jon Winet,
moderated by Natasha Boas - at Altman Siegel (1150 Minnesota Street)
This exhibition is inspired by, and named in honor of, Fred Turner’s important history, From Counterculture to Cyberculture. The exhibition is not, however, a literal history. Rather: it extrapolates from Turner’s historical arc in order to present a matrix of contemporary concerns, and emerging artists whose ways of thinking are enmeshed in those concerns.
From Turner's research it develops a historical conceit for
art-making in the present. A web of possibilities.
